Gardenpalooza starts Friday: A fun and educational week-long event for gardeners (sorry, no mosh pit!)

We're introducing a new event this spring called Gardenpalooza.  Starting Friday, March 20, and continuing to Thursday, March 26, stop by Sugar Creek for:

  • Special displays featuring the hottest new plants for 2009, our favorite gardening tools, butterfly and hummingbird gardening, and more.
  • 15% off all fertilizers
  • A fairy-sized scavenger hunt for kids, and a slightly more challenging scavenger hunt for adults (with prizes for all participants)
  • Free gardening handouts
  • Attendance prizes
  • One-on-one advice at our Gardening Help Desk -- ask questions, get plant suggestions, bring in a plant clipping for identification, request some design advice -- you name it, we'll help.  Staffed by one of our certified horticulturists.
  • An encore performance of our class, Beginning Perennial Gardening, on Sat., March 21, at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.  Call 314-965-3070 for class reservations.  For a complete list of upcoming gardening classes, look here.

Soil testing -- why you need it and how to get it done

Sugar Creek Gardens is partnering with the University of Missouri Extension to offer soil testing. It's easy, painless, and provides you with valuable information on the condition of the soil in your perennial garden, vegetable garden, or lawn.  You may be over-fertilizing your garden or lawn, which is costing you money and possibly affecting the health and vigor of your plants. A detailed nutrient report is e-mailed or mailed directly to your home with recommendations on what needs to be added to your soil to improve plant health.  It's as easy as dropping off 2 cups of dried soil at Sugar Creek.  Click here for more information on soil collecting techniques and advice. The soil test is $20 per sample.  It's the best money you'll spend in your garden all season!

Announcing new evening hours

Starting Tuesday, March 31, we will be open until 7:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.  Shop in the evening for a more leisurely gardening experience.  It's not happy hour -- it's flower hour!

Now taking pre-orders for the incredible new 'Incrediball' hydrangea

You've read about it, you've seen the pictures -- now you can reserve a Hydrangea arborescens 'Incrediball' in advance of their arrival to guarantee a plant and ensure the best selection.

An initial, limited shipment will be at Sugar Creek this weekend, Saturday, March 21, and then in increments weekly or every-other-week after that.

We request a 50% down payment on all reserved plants.  You can do this over the phone with a credit card, or stop by the nursery to pay in person.  $34.99 per plant.

'Incrediball' is an improved version of the old favorite, 'Annabelle,'  but with blooms four times larger and thick, beefy stems to support the giant flower heads.  No more floppy hydrangeas!  'Incrediball' thrives in sun or shade, grows 4' tall and wide, and blooms throughout the summer.  Blooms can be left on the shrub in the fall for winter interest.

The question we hear most often this time of year is "When can I start planting?"

Perennials can be planted *anytime of the year,* as long as the ground is dry. So what are you waiting for??
